Understanding UK Student Loan Repayment Plans
Student loan repayments in the UK are deducted automatically from your salary by your employer through the PAYE system. You only start repaying once your income exceeds the threshold for your specific plan. Repayments are calculated as a percentage of income above the threshold — not on your total income.
Plan 1
Plan 1 applies to English and Welsh students who started their course before 1 September 2012, and Northern Irish students. The repayment threshold for 2025/26 is £24,990, and you repay 9% of income above this threshold. Plan 1 loans are written off when you turn 65 or 25 years after the April you were first eligible to repay, whichever comes first.
Plan 2
Plan 2 applies to English and Welsh students who started their course on or after 1 September 2012. The repayment threshold for 2025/26 is £27,295, and you repay 9% of income above this threshold. Plan 2 loans are written off 30 years after the April you were first eligible to repay.
Plan 4
Plan 4 applies to Scottish students. The repayment threshold for 2025/26 is £31,395, with a 9% repayment rate on income above the threshold. Plan 4 loans are written off 30 years after the April you were first eligible to repay, or when you turn 65 (for older loans).
Plan 5
Plan 5 is the newest plan, applying to English and Welsh students starting their course from August 2023 onwards. The repayment threshold for 2025/26 is £25,000, with a 9% repayment rate. The key difference is that Plan 5 loans are written off 40 years after the April you were first eligible to repay, compared to 30 years for Plan 2.
Postgraduate Loan
The Postgraduate Loan is for Master's and Doctoral study. It has a lower threshold of £21,000 for 2025/26 and a reduced repayment rate of 6% (compared to 9% for undergraduate plans). Postgraduate loan repayments are made in addition to any undergraduate loan repayments you may have. The loan is written off 30 years after the April you were first eligible to repay.
Multiple Student Loans
If you have both an undergraduate and a postgraduate loan, you will repay both simultaneously. Each plan's repayment is calculated independently based on its own threshold and rate. This calculator supports selecting multiple plans to show your combined repayments.
