What is Marriage Allowance and how does it work?
Marriage Allowance (also known as the Marriage Tax Allowance) lets you transfer £1,260.00 of your Personal Allowance to your husband, wife or civil partner. This can reduce their income tax by up to £252.00 per year. To benefit, the lower earner must have income below the Personal Allowance of £12,570.00, meaning they have unused tax-free allowance that would otherwise go to waste. The higher earner must be a basic-rate taxpayer with income between £12,571.00 and £50,270.00 in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
One of the most overlooked benefits of Marriage Allowance is that you can backdate your claim by up to four tax years. This means that if you have been eligible but not claimed, you could receive a lump sum of over £1,000.00 covering previous years. The application process is straightforward and can be done online at gov.uk/marriage-allowance. Once approved, the allowance is automatically applied each year until one of you cancels it or your circumstances change. Marriage Allowance is separate from the Married Couple's Allowance, which is only available if one partner was born before 6 April 1935.
